SYC Annual Pirate Race

Invented by Blackbeard in the 1700’s, the race has been altered for the modern era: we now use tennis balls instead of cannon balls.

Sailboats of any size may enter.  At the start, one boat (chosen at random) hoists the Jolly Roger, and sets out to capture the others.  A capture occurs when a well-aimed tennis ball gets through the victim’s defenses and lands in its cockpit.  The captured vessel must then join the pirate fleet and attack the remaining free fleet. The last un-captured vessel is declared the winner, and earns the honor of starting out as the next race’s first pirate.

The annual sailing circus known as the Pirate Race will take place TBA.  Note that this time is different than the published SYC schedule. This is to avoid high winds in the afternoon.

A large square area with marks in all 4 corners is the course.  One boat starts out as the pirate, and captures other boats by throwing tennis balls into their cockpit. As each boat is “captured” they become pirates and capture others, until there is only one boat left, which is the winner of that race. This boat then becomes the pirate in the next race. This is a fun time, especially if you dress like a pirate, and talk like one.    Abaft and keel haul that mizzen… Etc.

Event is open to all SYC members, guests and parrots.

Boats need to be outfitted with a flag, which must be flown if you are a pirate.  Any size sailboat may participate

Sign up for club boats at the clubhouse

You must bring tennis balls. ( no cannon balls)  Each boat should have at least 6 at the start. The   club is not providing them this year, as no one can find them.

Bring personal flotation devices – no trips to Davy Jones locker

This event requires careful sailing,  no boat to boat contact is allowed. The   usual rules of sailing apply, such as starboard tack over Port., luffing rights. Etc.Anyone breaking these rules will be disqualified. Anyone causing boat damage is financially responsible.. so be careful.

Prizes will be awarded for winners and best costume on the dock immediately following the event.
